  1. General introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and its use in NSI Mrs Diana Makarenko-Piirsalu MSc in Landscape Ecology and Environmental Protection Geolytics OÜ Mere tee 15, Saviranna, Jõelähtme vald, Harjumaa, ESTONIA diana.m.piirsalu@gmx.ch Mob. +372 556 19 636 ESTP course on Geographic Information Systems (GIS): Use of GIS for making statistics in a production environment Statistics Norway, Oslo, 26th to 30th of March 2012 Attribution (by) Licensees may copy, distribute, display and perform the work and make derivative works based on it only if they give the author or licensor the credits in the manner specified by these. http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

  2. Topics of GIS @ NSI • Where from it has started? • Where are we now? • Main challenges and obstacles for producing gridded statistics

  3. Where from GIS has started? • Wecantrace GIS history back over many centuries to when people first started using geographic information - 19th century Source: Öber,S , Springfeldt, P 1991

  4. Where from GIS has started? • 1845 – Dr John Snow Choleraoutbreak • DR John Snowused a map to compare the geographical distribution of cholera victims and the location of water supply points. • Heconcluded that a major outbreak of cholera in Soho in 1845 was caused by contaminated water. • He was able to isolate a single water pump in Broad Street as the source of the cholera infection, thereby saving many lives. • Coulditbe a firstspatialhot-spotanalyse? 5. Where from GIS has started? 8. Where are we now? Extensive use for preparation, data collection, field work monitoring of census activities. ExamplesfromStatictis Estonia Source: Statistics Estonia

  11. Where are we now? • Many of NSI in EU are disseminating statistics regularly mainly on aggregated statistical units level only • Producing gridded statistics : • NSI-s using registers updating gridded statistics yearly bases • NSI – s with traditional/combined methods censuses updating gridded statistics once per 10 years • Downscaling gridded statistics from LAU or other units (not disseminated for the public) • Using Web Mapping • NSI´s who only disseminate thematic mapping LAU or other units • Disseminating with using Google Earth (LAU or other units) • Gridded statistics with spatial queries • Quite few of NSI are conducting spatial analyses for creating new knowledge ( neighborhood clustering, delineation of statistical units, accessibility of recreational areas etc)

  12. Some examples from outside of Europe • Statistics Japan thematic mapping application, grid data since 1970 Australian Bureau of Statistics Statistics South -Korea

  13. Let´s look what others are telling about the GI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poMGRbfgp38&feature=list_related&playnext=1&list=SPB536E2CAE9CD2EE1

  14. What are main obstacles ..??? • In producing gridded statistics, which are essential for society • In implementing GIS in NSI´s
