  2. Agamemnon’s Vengeanceby Sophocles This poem is about the vengeance of Agamemnon and how someone is coming for the person it is directed at . This person that it describes (referring to them as “her”) seems to be coming for this person to get revenge for Agamemnon. I like this poem because it is kind of mysterious and looks like it has more than one way to interpret it. “The Mask of Agamemnon” Discovered by Heinrich Schliemann in 1876 at Mycenae.

  3. The Death of Adonisby Theocritus This poem tells the story of Adonis and how he died. He had great hunting skills that even the goddess Artemis was jealous of, so she sent a boar to kill him. And then it tells how Aphrodite pitied the people who mourned over him. I liked this poem because it tells an interesting and sad story about the death of Adonis. “The Death of Adonis” statue in by Giuseppe Mazzuoli, 1709 in the Heritage Museum.

  4. Hymn to Apolloby Callimachus This poem is one of the hymns to the gods that were written by many Greek poets, this one is to Apollo, the Sun god. It was an interesting poem about Apollo where they basically praise and sing to him. It is fairly long and has a few different themes that they sing about, but it was quite interesting and I like the way it was written and the different themes it had in it. “Apollo and Artemis” by Brygos 470 BC, Louvre Museum Paris, France

  6. What force, what sudden impulse thus can make the laurel-branch, and all the temple shake! Depart ye souls profane; hence, hence! O fly far from this holy place! Apollo’s nigh; He knocks with gentle foot; the Delian palm Submissive bends, and breathes a sweeter balm: Soft swans, high hov’ring catch the auspicious sign, Wave their white wings, and pour their notes divine. Ye bolts fly back; ye brazen doors expand, Leap from your hinges, Phoebus is at hand.

  7. To great Apollo various arts belong, The skill of archers and the pow’rs of song; By him the sure events of lots are giv”n, by him the prophet speaks the will of heav’n, And wife physicians, taught by him delay The stroke of fate, and turn disease away.

  8. Besides Apollo shew’d my native place To Battus, and the fam’d Theraean race, A crow propitious sent, that flew before, And led the wand’rers to the Lybian shore. Apollo, marking from unclouded skies, Beheld Cyrene’s lofty tow’rs arise, And faithful swore, that Egypt’s king should gain The new-built city and the fertile plain.
