  1. What happens to Temperature and pressure with height through the atmosphere?

  2. Objectives

  3. The Atmosphere is Dynamic - Insolation, Albedo and the Heat Budget • Try to produce a flow chart from the text I read to you • Look at pages 208 to 209 of David Waugh and answer the following; • Describe how the solar energy cascade works. • What is insolation? How and why can it vary? • What is albedo? How does it vary for different surfaces? What impact does this have globally? • The heat budget – describe the heat budget then explain it.

  4. Incoming radiation 100 units Small amount absorbed in Stratosphere (1%) 24% absorbed by atmosphere Earth – 45% of incoming radiation reaches the Earth’s surface Clouds absorbsmall amounts (3%) and reflect more (20%) 24% reaches the Earth’s surface Scattering – 21% reaches the earth as diffuse radiation, the rest is scattered back to space Small amounts (4%) are reflected back to space by the Earth’s surface

  5. Review • Why is the Heat budget important? • Explain the flow chart below as a class;
