  4. Advances for African Americans The “Black Cabinet” – African American advisors to FDR.

  5. Election of 1936 The right: KS Gov. Alfred Landon – said the New Deal “violates the basic ideals of our American system.” The left: The Union Party – Supporters of Huey Long, Dr. Townsend, and Father Coughlin

  6. Court Packing Plan The Supreme Court did not think the New Deal was constitutional. FDR wanted to add justices that would vote his way. First major political misstep. Everyone saw this as a power grab.

  7. The Roosevelt Recession FDR decided to balance the budget and cut spending. The first Social Security payroll taxes of $2 billion were taken out. The economy plummeted, and almost 2 million people lost their jobs in 1937.

  8. Monopoly – introduced in 1935 at the height of the Great Depression. It is the best selling board game in the world. Why do you think it was so popular?

  9. The Last New Deal Reforms National Housing Act – subsidized loans for builders who would tear down slums and build low cost housing. Farm Security Admin – Gave loans to tenant farmers so they could buy their own farms. Fair Labor Standards Act – set minimum wage, 40 hour work week, ended child labor.

  10. Legacy of the New Deal “Broker state” – role of the gvt. Is to work out conflicts among competing interest groups. The biggest legacy was the new public attitude towards gvt. That gvt. would take care of them. “Safety Net” – gvt. relief programs intended to protect against economic disaster.

  11. How much gvt. is too much gvt? Do we still see legacies of the New Deal today?
