Questions and Answers • Keanna Brumant What work issue is it responding to historically? What was going on in history for society, for workers when this song was written (or in the period of time the song is written about)? The work issue it is responding to is in the sixties teenagers and adults who didn’t enjoytheir jobs and could wait until five o’clock when they clocked out. Five o’clock was the time that everyone would live their jobs to go home in the sixties. People who didn’t like their jobs would look forward to leaving at five. How many verses are there (taking out the chorus) that refer to work? There are six verses. How does this song reflect the everyday work experiences of ordinary workers? This reflects the everyday work of ordinary people because today, some people who don’t like their jobs look forward to leaving when their shifts end, For example I don’t enjoy my job so when I start my shift I count the hours until my shift ends.Which lyrics specifically relate to work? The lyrics that relate to work is verse one. When analyzed line-by-line, how does the song reflect the everyday, real life work of ordinary people? (Be specific—quote from song) When analyzed the song showed how some people would feel about their job. “Up every morning just to keep a job, I gotta fight my way through the hustling mob, Sounds of the city poundin in my brain, While another day goes down the drain”(the Vogues,V#1). In this quote it talks about the person getting up and getting ready for work and they aren’t not that excited about going to work.
Questions and Answers • Jovin Celestin • What is the overall message about work, a job, a career, vacation? The overall message of the song is work hard sometimes and it sometimes brings a lot of stress but when has with his girl he forgets all about his problems. How does it relate to one or more of the following Terkel quotations: “the scars brought home,” work as “violence to the spirit as well as the body,” work as a “search for daily meaning [not a] Monday through Friday sort of dying,” “status…becomes important…society, they feel, looks upon them as lesser,” “jobs that are too small for the spirit, “the extraordinary dreams of ordinary people.” The quote that most relates to our song is “Monday through Friday sort of dying”. This quote relates most to our story because the quote is saying sometime working all week is hard and you don’t wont to be there sometimes the song we have chosen is about a work day till five o clock and how hard it could be How does it connect to the issues that we’ve read about in the oral histories, short story, or poems? Be specific—name the pieces and how it connects. This can include the oral history you conducted. The song mostly connects to my oral history because its tilling a story about how hard a work day is till five o clock but it gets better after he comes home to his wife. In my oral history my mother doesn’t always like working and doing her job at the nursing home but knowing that she giving us a better future everyday helps her get through it How does it connect to current events and issues in the news? It don’t really connect to much with what going now because it was written so long ago.
Conclusion • In conclusion, we choose the song Five O’ clock world by the Vogues because the song is a good example of people who do not enjoy their place of employment and when they go to work the count down the hours until they have to go home.
