  4. Figure Interpreting • 2001年中国进出口总额达到5098亿美元,是1998年的4.6倍。 • In 2001,China’s total import and export volume reached $509.8 billion, 4.6 times as much as that in 1998.

  7. Note –takingA crucial technique of consecutive interpretation • Short-Term Memory (STM):The duration of STM is very short. It is up 6 to 30 seconds.Memory in interpreting only lasts for a short time. • Long-Term Memory (LTM):???

  8. Note –taking • Notes can help improve concentration, facilitate analysis of the speech, activate your memory and improve the accuracy of reproduction. • It is accepted that notes are helpfulto the interpretation, but its help is only secondary. In fact, the whole message depends largely on memory rather than notes.

  9. Note –taking Tip: • Keep a dynamic balance between memory and notes and try to be less dependent on your notes.

  14. Note-taking:What to note -Note down the main ideas. (words)× -Systematically note down the links between different ideas. -Pay attention to conjunctions, verb tenses, conditional forms, and modal verbs. -Note down accurately the numbers, dates and proper names. Tip: Digest before taking notes!

Use whatever language that comes to your mind • Interpreters are encouraged to use target language to take notes, thus helping the expressing of the final interpretation • Target language (less transcoding, more demanding ) • Source Language (less strain during processing) • the combination of TL and SL

  18. Guidelines for Note-Taking • 4.Be brief. Write down only the major points and important information use abbreviations, symbols,acronyms; use whatever language that comes to your mind: SL or TL) • Eg: The negotiation held between the UN and rebel forces in Afghanistan broke down. • (谈UN+阿反)X

  19. Guidelines for Note-Taking • 5. Write legibly Notes are useless if you cannot read them later • 6. Take notes vertically. T型 break up the sentence into sense units • 7. Don't be concerned with spelling and grammar.

  20. Guidelines for Note-Taking Tip: Notes are essentially individual in character. Try to develop your own personalized note-taking methods.

  21. College class notes • Taken down in details, in source language with understanding. They are useful after class. • Shorthand notes • Taken automatically/ mechanically in the source language without any analysis/ thinking. • Interpretation notes • They are helpful for the interpretation but its help is only secondary.Great attention is paid to understanding. Note down key points and most of the message is in your mind. Notes are there to trigger passive memory in your mind. It is useless after interpretation.
