  3. Meaning and Tone • Tone is a writer’s attitude toward his or her subject • The connotations in words can help convey its tone… • They rolled over the swells of the sea until they slid ashore. • They slammed over the waves until they hit land.

  4. Narrative Poetry • Elements similar to a short story • May contain • Characters • Plot • setting

  5. Lyric • Expresses thoughts and feelings from a single speaker. Often in highly musical verse.

  6. Limerick • Humorous, rhyming , five line poem with a specific rhythm and pattern of rhyme. • There was an Old Man with a beard,Who said, 'It is just as I feared!Two Owls and a Hen,Four Larks and a Wren,Have all built their nests in my beard!'by Edward Lear

  7. Concrete Poem • Shaped to look like its subject. Arrange lines to look like a picture on a page.

  8. Haiku • Japanese form of poetry about nature, made up of three lines. The first and third lines have 5 syllables while the middle has seven.
