Ionic Bonding
Ionic bonding occurs through the transfer of electrons between atoms, typically a metal and a non-metal, resulting in the formation of charged ions (cations and anions). To determine if a compound is ionic, the electronegativity difference (ΔEN) is calculated; a ΔEN greater than 1.7 indicates ionic character. Ionic compounds exhibit high melting points, electrical conductivity when molten or dissolved, and brittleness. This process also involves the release of lattice energy, which strengthens the bonding interactions within the crystal lattice.
