  2. Independence • The 19th century was a time of independence for much of Latin America • European powers (mainly Spain) did not generally leave voluntarily. Armed resistance was needed to gain independence.

Independence Example 1 - Venezuela • Venezuela gained its independence from Spain at the beginning of the 19th century under the leadership of Simon Bolivar • Read the Primary Source provided, figure out what each of the following terms means from the context, and write down the definition • Also, mark when Venezuela gained its independence on your timeline

Independence Example 2 - Cuba • Read “Cuba and the United States” on pages 559-561 of the American History textbook and answer the following questions • Why was the US able to influence Cuba? • What is protectorate? • What role has the US had in Latin America? • Mark on your timeline when Cuba gained its independence from Spain
