Adjectives. Comparative and Superlative. Comparative Adjectives. A comparative adjective compares only 2 nouns. When comparing 2 nouns add –er to the adjective. If the adjective is a long word, write more in front of it instead of adding –er to the end of the word.

  2. Comparative Adjectives A comparative adjective compares only 2 nouns. When comparing 2 nouns add –er to the adjective. If the adjective is a long word, write more in front of it instead of adding –er to the end of the word.

Examples of Comparative Adjectives • The mountain is tall. • A mountain is taller than a hill. • The view from a mountain is more beautiful than from a hill. • Notice that tall adds –er because it is a short adjective. • Notice that you add more in front of beautiful because it is a long adjective.

  4. Superlative Adjectives A superlative adjective compares 3 or more nouns. When comparing 3 or more nouns, add –est to the adjective. If the adjective is a long word then write most in front of it instead of adding –est to the end.

  5. Examples of Superlative Adjectives • Denver is the highest city in the United States. • Denver is the most amazing city we have ever seen. • Notice that –est is added to high because it is a short adjective. • Notice that most is added in front of amazing because it is a long adjective.

  6. Exceptions to the Rules • Some adjective have irregular forms of the words. • Good or well, better, best • Bad, worse, worst

  7. Another Hint Say the word and ask yourself if it makes sense. .. Would you say something is “more well”? Would you say something is “amazingist”? Would you say something is “more bad”?

  8. Spelling Comparatives and Superlatives Correctly When adding –er or –est to and adjective that ends with a consonant and y, change the y to i and then add –er or –est. Happy happier happiest Funny funnier funniest

  9. Spelling Comparatives and Superlatives Correctly For adjectives that end in a single consonant after a single vowel, double the final consonant before adding –er or –est. Big Bigger Biggest Hot Hotter Hottest

  10. Practice Write the correct form of the adjective. The hike was (hard) than the one we took yesterday. The sun is (hot) than it was yesterday. I’m feeling (bad) than I did this morning. This is the (tough) climb we’ve ever done.

  11. Check Your Work The hike was harder than the one we took yesterday. The sun is hotter than it was yesterday. I’m feeling worse than I did this morning. This is the toughest climb we’ve ever done.

  12. More Practice Write the correct form of the adjective. It’s (sunny) up here than it was in the forest. You get the (good) view of all from this cliff. That is the (remarkable) sight I have ever seen. These sights are (amazing) than those.
