Changed the purpose of the war. Britain will now support the Union because they were against slavery. • Gettysburg Address (1863) – Speech made by Lincoln at the dedication of the national cemetery after the battle of Gettysburg. “These dead shall not have died in vain” - we must carry on what they started and gave their life for. “Government of the people, by the people and for the people shall not perish from this earth.” - we must save democracy and freedom for all men. • Second Inaugural Address (1865) – Calls for a time of healing “with malice toward none, with charity toward all.” Lincoln just wants to bring the coutry back together, no punishment on the south just peace. Lincoln is assassinated 5 days after the war is over • Lincoln wanted a peaceful rebuilding of the union. This plan will die with Lincoln • Andrew Johnson becomes president when Lincoln is assassinated • Radical Republicans take over Congress and want the South to pay for all the “costs” of war as well as be punished for starting it.
