1. ADJECTIVES Definition An adjective is a describing word. It describes people or things. Words for people or things are nouns, so adjectives describe nouns.

2. Adjectives often come before the nouns they describe! • a beautiful princess • a noisy classroom • a brave soldier • a large house • a close friend

3. Adjectives can also come after the noun they describe, later in the sentence • Honey is sweet. • This sum is difficult. • The bus is very crowded. • The children are quiet. • The sea is rough today.

4. Adjectives have lots of endings!! • Some adjectives end in ~ful • a helpful policeman • a forgetful man • a successful shot • colourful clothes • a wonderful holiday

5. Here’s another type of ending!! • Some adjectives end in ~less • a meaningless word • a merciless king • a lawless town • a cloudless sky • some homeless refugees

6. Here’s yet another type of ending!! • Some adjectives end in ~ous • an adventurous climber • a notorious gang • a ferocious animal • some studious pupils • a poisonous snake

7. ?? DID YOU KNOW ?? • You can also add ~fulto nouns like spoon and cup to form new nouns to talk about amounts. For example, you can say: • A spoonful of medicine • A mouthful of jelly • A pocketful of coins • A handful of beans • Two cupfuls of flour
