Adjectives. An adjective is a word that describes a noun or a pronoun . Agreement of adjectives. French adjectives agree in gender (masculine and feminine) and in number (singular or plural) with the nouns or pronouns they modify.

  1. Adjectives An adjectiveis a wordthatdescribes a noun or a pronoun.

  2. Agreement of adjectives • French adjectives agree in gender (masculine and feminine) and in number (singular or plural) with the nouns or pronouns they modify.

  3. Most adjectives form the feminine by adding an « e » to the masculine petit----petite grand----- grande

  4. Adjectives ending in silent “e”do not change in the feminine. Aimable –kind Difficile – difficult Faible- weak

  5. Adjectives ending in –eux form the feminine by changing the x to se • Heureux- heureuse (happy) • Dangereux- dangereuse (dangerous) • Paresseux- paresseuse (lazy)

  6. Adjectives ending in –f form the feminine by changing –f to -ve • Sportif – sportive (sporty) • Actif- active (active) • Neuf- neuve (new)

  7. Adjectives ending in al Add an ‘”e” to make it feminine Add an “es” to make it feminine plural Change “al” to aux to make it plural only in the masculine form.

  8. More irregular adjectives • El ----- add an elle (ponctuel----ponctuelle) • On ----add an onne (mignon – mignonne)

  9. Some adjectives have irregularfeminine • Beau (bel) • Nouveau (nouvel) • Vieux (vieil) ***the adjectives beau,nouveau, and vieux change to bel,nouvel, and vieil before a masculine singular noun beginning with a vowel or silent h • Belle • Nouvelle • vieille

  10. Placement of the adjectives • Article + noun + adjective Ex: the happy girl • La fille heureuse

  11. Some adjectives come before the noun! • Beauty • Age • Goodness • Size
