  1. Adjectives not Preceded by Articles Frau Lizz Caplan-Carbin (adapted by Monica Davis)

  2. Up to this point, you have learned how to form adjectives after “der” words and how to form adjectives after “ein” words. But what about forming adjectives without either a definite (der) or indefinite (ein) article in front of them? How do we form these adjectives? Observe the following: Adjective after “der” word: Ich sehe das verrückte Mädchen (n.). I see the crazy girl. Adjective after “ein” word: Ich habe ein verrücktes Kind (n.). I have a crazy kid. Unpreceded adjective: Ich habe braunes Haar (n.). I have brown hair. Ich habe heißen Kaffee (m.). I have hot coffee. Ich habe frische Wurst (f.). I have fresh sausage.

  3. Note what happens to adjectives that do not have a “der” or “ein” word in front of them (unpreceded). Because there are no “der” or “ein” words to help identify the noun’s grammatical function (case), the adjective has to take an ending to help us to know what the noun’s case is. These endings will be similar to the ending of the “der” or “ein” word. Unpreceded adjective: Ich habe braunes Haar (n.). I have brown hair. Adjective after “der” word: (Ich habe das braune Haar.) Unpreceded adjective: Ich habe heißen Kaffee (m.). I have hot coffee. Adjective after “der” word: (Ich habe den heißen Kaffee.) Unpreceded adjective: Ich habe frische Wurst (f.). I have fresh sausage. Adjective after “der” word: (Ich habe die frische Wurst.)
