My Digital Autobiography A collection of thoughts on my past, my present, and my future. By Cecil Brooks Jr.
Mom & Dad • To know me, you must first know who made me! These are my parents, and I’m glad to have them. They both did a bunch a things to provide a comfortable life for me, and they do what they can to maintain that life. As with most teenagers, their traditions that were set as they grew up often rub against my traditions that I’m developing. However, they’re understanding that I’m growing, and I’m understanding that they’re experienced. It’s all part of the everlasting cycle of life….
Los Amigos • Next, you must know who I spend most of my free time with. These guys are just amazing! The technical name for them would be “friends”, but these people are more like family. Most of them are from school, although we visit each other and keep in contact regularly. I’ve known them for more than a quarter of my life, and I have countless good memories with all of them.
La Familia • The people who surround me outside of school are my family members. I like my family because they’re an unlimited fountain of moral support, as any family should be. I may not always feel very close with them, but I’ve known them my whole life. They’re there when I need them, and I’m there when they need me.
The spaces between seeing my family members are called weekdays. The place where I spend my weekdays are in school (thankfully). I attend school in South Bronx Preparatory, as I’ve been doing for 5 years now. It’s pretty small, with less than 1,000 students. However, it becomes much of a community after a while. La Escuela
El Barrio • I’m a proud resident of the South Bronx (go BX!!). I live right on the border area between Mott Haven and Melrose, so I literally grew up in between private houses and public housing. It has led to plenty of interesting experiences! This has been one of the main factors in me growing to have an open mind. Despite the common jokes and stereotypes, the South Bronx has many wonderful places and sights to see. It is the intersection of various nationalities, which is apparent in the stores you might see. It can be just as good of a place as any other neighborhood, and I want people to understand that. Influences on my community include those from Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Europe.
Disclaimer: • We’re not all dirt, garbage, and crap like the media may lead you to believe. Don’t be surprise if the Bronx isn’t what you expected.
El Bronx • Here in the South, you can find plenty of tall buildings and symbols of community pride. The Bronx is a diverse borough with peopleand landscapes that vary by region. To the North, you can find places like Lehman College and Pelham Bay Park. Plenty of green scenery.
Manhattan • In addition to the Bronx, I also like Manhattan. From the cultural spots in Harlem to the cool stores in Columbus Circle, I can find things here that I don’t see in the Bronx. Although many people forget, Manhattan isn’t far from the Bronx at all. The Upper East side is literally across the river from Mott Haven. Doesn’t it make you realize that the world is smaller than we think?
La Musica • For almost six years, music has held my life in a chokehold. It allows me to express myself without being judged, and it allows me to understand other people. It helps me in my mission to make the world a lot smaller. Why would I ever leave it?? I love music!! As you can see, I perform my songs at various venues. Sometimes I have a partner, other times I go solo.
Hobbies • In addition to music, I have many miscellaneous hobbies and interests that occupy the rest of my time. Like most people, I don’t just like one thing. I have a range of interests that stretch across different areas, and anyone can find something in common with me. The world is made of an intricate web that connects everyone in some way. When we fall prey to the traps of stereotypes and prejudices, we undermine what the entire world was built on. Although my story is longer than a few Power Point slides, I hope you learned something from it. Thank you for your time!
