  2. Adequate • (adj) Enough; sufficient • One blanket will be adequate on such a warm night.

  3. Administer • 1. (v) to manage or direct. • The Red Cross administers the blood donor program • 2. (v) to give as a treatment or assistance. • The scout leader administered first aid.

  4. Agitate • (v)1. To disturb or upset. • Talk of sharks agitated the scuba divers. • (v) To move with an irregular, fast, or violent action. • Strong winds agitated the surface.

  5. Capitulate • (v) to give in; to surrender. • The airline capitulated to the pilot and granted him higher pay.

  6. Citrus • (n) A fruit including oranges, lemons, grapefruits, and limes. • Citrus is an excellent source of vitamin C. • (n) A tree that produces these fruits. • Citruses grow well in Florida.

  7. Disrupt • (v.) to break up the orderly course of. • An angry protester disrupted the president’ speech. • (v) to interrupt; bring to a temporary halt. • A strike by the drivers disrupted service on the street.

  8. Hovel • (n.) An unpleasant, cramped, and dilapidated place to live. • The ruling country forced its captives to live in hovels after the war.

  9. Illiterate • (adj.) Unable to read or write. • Volunteers are needed to help teach illiterate people how to read.

  10. Indifferent • (adj.) Not concerned about; not caring. • The parents were mad because their child was indifferent about his failing grades. • (adj.) Not very good or very bad; passable. • Her indifferent grades were just barely passable.

  11. Menial • (adj) Of or relating to low-level, humble work. • Desperate for money, Oliver was willing to accept menial work with low pay to get by.

  12. Permanent • (adj.) Lasting or expected to last for a long time. • A child’s first permanent teeth appear at about the age of six.

  13. Respite • (n) A period of rest; a pause. • The rain brought a welcome respite from the overwhelming heat.

  14. Strenuous • (adj) needing much effort; using a lot of energy. • Chopping wood is strenuous work. • (adj) Very active; vigorous • The plan to close the local school met with strenuous opposition from parents.

  15. Toil • (v) To work long and hard. • Sugar cane cutters toil in the fields from daylight to dark. • (v) To make one’s way with difficulty. • We toiled up the steep hill.

  16. Urgent • (adj) needing quick action and attention. • The county has an urgent need for a new hospital.
