  2. What are Adjectives? • Adjectives are used to describe a noun, or distinguish the noun from a group of similar objects. • The blue pen is on the desk. • The pen is on the wooden desk. • The spicy food was delicious. • The black hat fits well.

  3. Spanish Adjectives • In Spanish, most adjectives change form, depending upon whether the word they modify is masculine or feminine.  • Elchico alto • The tall boy • Lachicaalta • The tall girl

  4. Plural Adjectives • In English, adjectives don’t change when the noun is plural. • The blue pens are on the desk. • The pens are on the wooden desks. • The spicy foods were delicious. • The black hats fit well.

  5. Spanish Plural Adjectives • Adjectives also change form depending upon whether the word they modify is singular or plural. • el chico altolos chicosaltos • la chica altalas chicasaltas

  6. Spanish Adjectives (cont.) • In Spanish, adjectives have 6 forms/endings: • o • os • a • as • e • es

  8. Modifying Adjectives • The correct form of the adjective depends upon the noun it modifies. Is the noun masculine or feminine? Singular or plural? • libro rojored book • pluma rojared pen • libros rojosred books • plumas rojasred pens

  9. Modifying Adjectives (cont.) • Adjectives that end in -e also change form for singular or plural. To form the plural, simply add -s. • la chica inteligentelas chicas inteligentes

  10. Modifying Adjectives (cont.) • Adjectives that end in -e do not, however, change form for masculine or feminine. • la chica inteligenteel chico inteligente • las chicas inteligenteslos chicos inteligentes

  11. Modifying Adjectives • Similarly, most adjectives that end in a consonant do change form for singular or plural, but do not change for masculine or feminine. • a chica popularel chico popular • las chicas populareslos chicos populares
