  2. Mein Kampf – Hitler outlines his political & social agenda. Unification of all Germans under one government. “Master Race” = Aryans Territorial expansion east to Poland and Russia Discriminated against: Jews, communists, intellectuals, homosexuals, non-Aryans. German Aggression

  3. Japanese Aggression • Seize territory in N. China (Manchuria) in order to expand territory & gain natural resources to help economy. • Japanese military leaders invaded without the approval of the Prime Minister (who was assassinated when he tried to negotiate an end to the invasion).

  4. Alliances Axis: Germany builds alliances with: Italy – 1936, Rome-Berlin Axis Japan – 1936, Anti-Comintern Pact USSR – 1939, Nazi-Soviet Non Aggression Pact Allies: France Britain USSR – 1941 (after Germany attacks Russia) USA – 1941 (after Japan attacks Pearl Harbor, USA)

  6. United States Involvement • Neutral, Isolationist views dominate in America: Neutrality Acts • Roosevelt, however supported internationalism (trade & cooperation = prosperity) • Sold weapons to China in 1937 to support them (b/c neither country had officially declared “war”)

  7. Hitler’s Demands 1. Austrian Unification with Germany • Nazi Party popular among German speaking people in Austria, but before a vote for unification with Germany could be brought to the people, Hitler unified them by force. 2. Annex Sudetenland (part of democratic Czechoslovakia) • In 1938 Czechoslovakian leaders met with other European nations to determine their fate and Hitler was given the Sudetenland. 3. Return of Danzig (became part of Poland after WWI) & “Polish Corridor” highway/road • Important sea port with strong German roots.

Europe’s (Allied) response Appeasement failed: France and Britain must mobilize in order to protect neighboring countries –Poland - from German aggression. • 1939 – Sept. 1st – Germany invades Poland from the west. USSR from the east. • Sept. 3rd - Britain & France declare war on German, putting alliances into play. • Oct. 5th – Warsaw, Poland falls to Germany • 1940 – June 4th – Evac. (at sea) of French and British troops from Dunkirk, France. • June 22nd French surrender to Germany. Petain (Nazi “puppet”) becomes leader of German occupied France. • June – Oct. German air attacks on Britain. Britain does not surrender
