  1. Applying narrative theorists to Love Lies Low Kate Williams

  2. Linear Structure My film follows a linear structure as it has a beginning middle and end. This is because the audience are introduced to the character and the story follows simultaneously in chronological order.

  3. ProppPropp’s theory of narrative is driven by the characters using a set of narrative functions Love Lies Low fits in with Propp as it includes a protagonist, princess and villain/false hero. The main character is the villain/false hero as he pretends to be nice to win her back. The protagonist would be the current boyfriend trying to protect his girlfriend and the villains ex. The ex girlfriend would be the princess as the protagonist and villain are both after her.

  4. BarthesBarthes describes narrative as a series of codes that are read and interpreted by the audience Love Lies Low fits in with the semic code. When the main character is looking at the photos on the wall, Facebook, and the diagetic sound is heard, these all connote that she was his girlfriend and no longer is. The diagetic sound also suggests a plan for payback.

  5. TodorovTodorov describes narrative as going from equilibrium to disequilibrium back to an altered equilibrium Love Lies Low also fits in the Todorov as the film starts with an equilibrium of everyday life and the main character being heart broken. He seeks revenge on his ex girlfriend which causes the disruption. The conflict takes place between the main character and the protagonist, but also with the ex girlfriend. The resolution is that the problem is sorted, the main character has seeked revenge and now has to pay the price for it due to the circumstances.

  6. Levi-StraussLevi-Strauss describes narrative as created by constant conflict of binary opposites The 2 binary opposites within my film are love and hate. The main character still loves his ex girlfriend although wanting to seek revenge it soon turns nasty. The ex girlfriend on the other hand hates her ex but then becomes sorry for him and develops a love, continuing the theory of Levi-Strauss.
