  2. STARTER Cold War wise, what do you already know about…… WHAT HAD HAPPENED JUST BEFORE 1956 TO BUILD TENSION? HUNGARY Try to come up with at least one point for each

  3. The USSR take over Eastern Europe 1945-48

  4. A bit of context (what was going on in 1956-7) • As Europe began to recover after the war, the people living in the satellite states of eastern Europe compared themselves with the people of western Europe. • They saw that the people of western Europe had…. • More freedom – • More than one party to vote for in elections • A free press which was allowed to criticise the government • No secret police • Freedom to travel wherever they wanted • Relaxed censorship in the arts and media • A higher standard of living • Their economies were not controlled by the state • Working hours were shorter, and pay higher • They could trade with a wide range of other countries • Unsurprisingly, many people living in the satellite states wanted this kind of life for themselves! However, this would mean getting rid of Soviet communist control. The USSR would not allow this to happen…if one satellite state broke away, the whole lot might, and that would be the end of the USSR’s buffer zone in eastern Europe.

  5. If we look at the bigger picture of the Cold War, then the Hungarian Uprising was all about the USSR (and its new leader, Khrushchev) stamping its authority on the satellite states of Eastern Europe (known as the Soviet bloc), to show them that there was no chance of breaking away…..

  7. ACTIVITY You’ll be working in teams. Your aim (by the end of the second lesson) is to make a fact sheet containing the key points about the Hungarian Uprising of 1956-7, including the causes, what happened, and the results of the uprising. Here’s what the fact sheet looks like…..

  8. STAGE ONE • Working with the 8 people in your team, read through your info sheet carefully. Each person in the team needs to turn it into a A3 sized teaching resource. • Guidelines….. • Please don’t just copy the info sheet out! • Before you start your teaching resource, work out how you will present it. You could try: • categorising the info on the info sheet – eg inserting subheadings • Highlighting the facts which you think are most important • Picking out names of people who are important, and their role in the uprising/build up to the uprising • You can present your teaching resource however you like. Try to use colours, pictures, diagrams….to make it memorable. You have the rest of this lesson + homework time to complete your teaching resource
