  2. Abhor Definition: v.) to shrink from in disgust; to detest Sentence: I abhor animal cruelty and strongly protest against it. Abhorrent: adj.) Disgusting; causing loathing.

  3. Affable Definition: Adj.) Pleasant; approachable; gracious Sentence: Her affable manner helped her make many great friends. Affability: n.) friendliness of manner.

  4. Amiss Definition: Adv.) In a wrong or imperfect way. Adj.) Out of order; wrong. Sentence: You could tell something was amiss by the eerie silence in the school’s hallways.

  5. Despondent Definition: Adj.) depressed from loss of hope or confidence; utterly discouraged. Sentence: I felt completely despondent after failing three math tests in a row.

  6. Entreat Definition: v.) to ask earnestly; to beg. Sentence: I entreated my parents time after time to please buy me a dog. Entreaty: n.) a plea or earnest request.

  7. Haunt Definition: v. 1) to stay in one’s mind continually. Sentence: I am haunted by my mother’s voice every time it’s raining; I hear her telling me to put on my rain coat. 2) To visit frequently Sentence: Mr. Tetreault haunts the book store; they know him by name. 3) To appear in the form of a ghost. Sentence: The spirit of the man he murdered haunted him every night.

  8. Impel Definition: v. 1) to drive or to propel. Sentence: The riptide impelled him directly towards the rocks. 2) To urge or drive by force or moral pleasure. Bob was impelled to return the wallet he found.

  9. Interminable Definition: Adj.) endless; seeming to be without end. Sentence: The snow delay gave us an interminable wait at the airport with nothing to do.

  10. Irascible Definition: Adj.) quick-tempered; irritable. Sentence: His irascible personality made him hard to be around because he was always snapping at you.

  11. Profound Definition: Adj. 1) intense; deeply felt. Sentence: The woman felt profound joy when she found out her husband was the only survivor on the plane crash. 2) Having understanding or knowledge that goes beneath the surface, beyond the obvious. Yoda may seem to give simple advice, but if you think about it, his words are quite profound.

  12. Recluse Definition: n.) a person who lives apart from society and often alone. Sentence: He became a recluse when his wife died; you’d think he moved away. Reclusive: Adj.) withdrawn from society.

  13. Reverberate Definition: v.) to be repeated as in a series of echoes or vibrations. Sentence: The scream reverberated off the walls as it echoed throughout the house.

  14. Sage Definition: Adj.) having wisdom and good judgment. Sentence: The village wise-man always had sage advice to offer. n. 1) a person known for wisdom and good judgment. The sage suggested that I never tell my wife that those pants make her look fat. 2) An aromatic grayish-green plant used in cooking. One of the secret spices in KFC chicken is sage.

  15. Tirade Definition: n.) a long, angry speech. Sentence: The man was arrested for disturbing the peace after his tirade with a megaphone at six a.m.

  16. Tremulous Definition: Adj. 1) marked by trembling or shaking. Chihuahuas are very tremulous creatures. 2) Timid or fearful. She was extremely tremulous after watching a horror movie by herself at night.
