Why should I be in Advanced English? • Higher order thinking skills are emphasized • More involved and hands-on projects • Preparation for college • Junior and Senior English classes are weighted • Senior Advanced English is dual credit with John A. Logan • Get your ENG 101 and 102 credits while still in high school

  3. So what do I have to do? Summer reading projects

  4. Read two novels

  5. Complete two assignments Of Mice and Men I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings Complete an essay over an assigned topic Must be submitted via email by July 11th Must pass with 80% or better Take an exam at FCHS on August 8th at 10am Must pass with 80% or better

  6. What kind of essay will I have to write? • You will be given several topics from which to choose • You must use evidence from the novel to support your points • Quotes • Examples • Chapters and page numbers

  7. Plagiarism • Any evidence that you have taken ideas, words, phrases, or passages from any source other than the novel (internet, previously written essays, or friend’s work) will result in an automatic elimination in consideration for the Advanced English placement.

  8. What kind of test will I have to take? • 50 multiple choice questions over events from the novel • 10 character matching • 20 vocabulary words • Questions over literary devices used in the novel • Similes • Metaphors • Personificiation • Point of view • 2 essay questions about themes or big ideas from the novel

  9. How can I prepare for the test? • Study guides, vocabulary worksheets and activities • Close reading and note taking • Online quizzes
