  2. Childhood • Abraham Lincoln was born February 12, 1809 in a log cabin in Kentucky. His dad was a farmer and carpenter. He was mostly self educated. He learned how to farm but did not enjoy it. • Thomas Jonathon Jackson was born on January 21, 1824 in Clarksburg, West Virginia. He was self educated but then went to West Point Military Academy and graduated 17th in his class.

  3. Careers • Abraham Lincoln became a lawyer and a Republican politician. In 1860, he got elected president of the United States of America. Six weeks later, the Civil War began. • After College, Thomas Jonathon Jackson was an officer in the Mexican War. He taught military tactics and science after that. He enjoyed art and culture during the summers.

  4. Civil War • Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 which led to all United States slaves being freed. Lincoln gave many speeches while President during the Civil War including the Gettysburg Address. He was reelected President in 1864. • Thomas Jackson led Confederate troops to Virginia to the Battle of Bull Run in 1861. During all the battle gunfire, he stayed calm and stood like a stone wall. That is how he got his nickname “Stonewall Jackson”. Soldiers admired his courage.

  5. Deaths • On April 14th, 1865, Abraham Lincoln was shot by actor John Wilkes Booth. He had been in a play at Ford’s Theater in Washington D.C. and died the next morning. He was the first president to ever be assassinated. • Stonewall Jackson Fought in many battles, but was wounded by friendly fire at the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863. Eight days later he got pneumonia and died.
