  2. Types of Adjectives • Describe nouns and pronouns • Nouns – name a person, place, thing, or idea • Pronouns – takes the place of a noun • Answer these questions: • Which one? thatgirl, mybook • What kind? fluffybunny, redsock • How many/much? sevendays, nofood

  3. Types of Adjectives • Normal adjectives - come before modified noun/pronoun • Pretty girl • Red sweater • Two boys • Possessives(John’s; Amy’s; pronouns:my, your, our, its, their, his, her)

  4. Types of Adjectives • Participles – formed from a verb+ ing or +ed • frightened child (verb = frighten) • shocked man (verb = shock) • shivering puppy (verb = shiver) • whining baby (verb = whine) • Predicate adjectives (follow a linking verb and describe the subject) • He is handsome. • The cookies tasted delicious. • The soup smells spicy.

Types of Adjectives Articles • A, an(indefinite) – refer to one of a GENERAL group of people, places, things, or ideas • Use a before words that start with a consonant sound (a boy, a unicorn) • Use an before words that start with a vowel (a, e, i, o, u) sound (an apple, an hour) • The(definite) – identifies SPECIFIC (clearly defined) people, places, things, and ideas (the boy, the unicorn, the apple)

  8. Types of Adjectives Proper adjectives • Always start with a capital letter • Formed from proper nouns from these common endings: • -an (Germany to German beer) • -ian (Belgium to Belgian waffles) • -ese (Japan to Japanese culture) • -ish (England to English class)

  9. Types of Adjectives Demonstratives – this/these (near); that/those (far) • Demonstrative Adjectives - Point out something and modify (come before) a noun and answers Which one/ones? Example:this dog, these dogs, that dog, those dogs • Demonstrative Pronouns – take the place of a noun (no noun follows) Example:Thatis my dog. Those are mine.
