Holocaust • Discovered after Germany surrendered in 1945 • 1941 Nazis adopted the “Final Solution” to the Jewish problem: death camps • German scientists experimented with the most efficient ways of killing large numbers of people • Jews shipped to the camps, stripped of everything, hair shaved, separated from their families

  3. Healthy people were put to work while the old, young and sick were killed • “Showers” spouted deadly Zyklon-B gas • Many others died from overwork, starvation, and disease • By 1945 over 6 million Jews, Roma/Gypsies, Slavs and other “inferiors” had been murdered

  5. Allied Victory in Europe • Germany surrenders May 7, 1945 • War in the Pacific intensifies • Japanese army still strong – vowed to “fight to the last person” • U.S. Government decides to use the atomic bomb

  6. Atomic Bomb • Equal to 20 000t of TNT • Manhattan Project: top-secret plan to develop a nuclear bomb • Uranium from the Eldorado mine at Great Bear Lake, NWT, Canada (owned by Canadian government)

August 6, 1945 • In order to stop Japan, the U.S.A. decides to use the atomicbomb: President Truman (Roosevelt’ssuccessor) gives the order to drop the two bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki • U.S. Bomber “Enola Gay” drops the first bomb on Hiroshima, kills 70 000 instantly, another 130 000 severely wounded • People vaporized, burned by radiation, crushed by collapsed buildings

  8. Atomic Bomb • Second bomb dropped on Nagasaki three days later, kills 40 000 people • Power of the atomic bomb puts an end to the war • Emperor Hirohito surrenders August 15, whichmarks the official end of the Second World War
