  1. CELLS

  2. You started out when your dad’s sperm and mom’s egg met… But as an adult will be close to 100,000,000,000,000 cells!

  3. However, bacteria cells (prokaryotes) will outnumber your own cells in your body…

  4. 10 to 1 • Recent studies showed 500 different species living on human skin • Individual humans may have very specific bacteria—your bacteria might be different from mine… a unique “bacterial signature” • Some bacteria have a mutualistic relationship with us—they help! • Other bacteria might contribute to obesity, skin disorders, inflammatory diseases, etc. • Mapping the human microbiome may be more important than the human genome in understanding and treating disease

  5. What about your mouth…KISSING? http://indianapublicmedia.org/amomentofscience/dog-mouth-vs-human-mouth/

  6. APOPTOSIS…

  7. = programmed cell death Why do cells commit suicide?

  8. Cells are part of your army…KILLERS, in fact, that keep your body healthy! • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KTDz-ZisZ0

  9. Cells have certain jobs to do within a multicellular organism. Their structure is specialized for their function.

  10. Sometimes, things go wrong and cells become CANCEROUS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXTsxPPcTEs&NR=1

  11. Unicellular organisms are everywhere! Some are harmless and others can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and death!

  12. Cells are like factories.

  13. The longest cells in the human body are the motor neurons. They can be up to 4.5 feet (1.37 meters) long and run from the lower spinal cord to the big toe. Nerve cells in especially long animals, such as the Giant Squid and Colossal Squid, may have nerve cells as long as 12 m (39 ft). Ostrich Egg Cell—might be the heaviest single cell.

  14. How do you feel about being an enormous amount of cells lumped together (though quite organized)? What about those pesky bacteria cells living in and on you? We didn’t even get to the fungi!
