  1. CELLS

  2. Cells are living units that move, grow, react, protect themselves, and reproduce.

  3. In a single drop of blood, more than one million cells exist.

  4. Human Cells • blood cells • muscle cells • nerve cells • bone cells • skin cells

  5. Parts of the Cell

  6. NUCLEUS

  7. Cells have a round core called the nucleus. The nucleus is the “brain” of the cell.

  8. It tells the cell how to reproduce and what function each part of the cell is responsible for performing.

  9. nuclear membrane thin coating that covers the nucleus . It is covered with small holes called nuclear pores.

  10. These pores allow material to be passed back and forth between the nucleus and the rest of the cell.

  11. NUCLEAR MEMBRANE NUCLEAR PORES

  12. cytoplasm gel-like substance that floats between nuclear membrane and the thin outer shell of the cell called the cell membrane.

  13. Cytoplasm supports the shape of the cell and keeps floating pieces in place.

  14. It also has chemicals and protein particles in it that help keep the cell alive.

  15. cytoplasm

  16. cell membrane helps keep shape of the cell and controls entry of oxygen into the cell and waste products out of the cell.

  17. Inside the cell there are nine primary types of structures.

  18. mitochondria powerhouse of the cell that stores energy like a battery until it is needed by the cell

  19. Its function is to break food particles down into energy and then store this energythe cell will need to reproduce and survive.

  20. mitochondria

  21. Golgi bodies stacks of flat sacks

  22. Golgi bodies store protein and transport it and chemicals to other parts of the cell.

  23. GOLGI BODIES

  24. nucleolus small sphere inside the nucleus that manufactures ribosomes

  25. NUCLEOLUS NUCLEUS

  26. ribosomes small, round shapes that make protein

  27. RIBOSOMES

  28. endoplasmic reticulum hollow sheets of thin material where ribosomes are attached

  29. vacuoles round bubble-like structures that contain water and dissolved minerals

  30. V ACUOLE

  31. Vacuoles are fairly small in animal cells. Plant cells contain huge vacuoles.

  32. lysosome • digestion center of the cell • digests particles that may be harmful to the cell

  33. LYSOSOME

  34. microtubules hollow cylinders that help shape and support cell

  35. MICROTUBULES

  36. centrioles help with cell reproduction

  37. C E N T R I O L E

  38. no chloroplast small temporary vacuoles flexible cell membrane chloroplast large permanent vacuoles rigid cell wall Animal Plant
