  2. Intro Our understanding of cells as the fundamental unit of life (for both plants and animals) was revolutionary in the seventieth century and even in the nineteenth century. Few scientists then thought that humans shared common traits with plants.

  3. CELL THEORY The modern cell theory consists of three statements based on a large body of scientific research. The original work was done by Matthias Schleiden, Theodore Schwan and Rudolf Virchow. All living things are composed of cells. Cells are the basic structural and functional units of life. All cells arise from the division of other cells. When the theory was developed, the reception of this theory was similar to that of cloning sheep (except for the world-wide media coverage)

  4. Types of Cells Prokaryotic – a type of cell that does not have its chromosomes surrounded by a nuclear envelope eg. bacteria Eukaryotic – a type of cell that has a true nucleus, DNA is surrounded by a nuclear envelope eg. plant & animal
