What were they? • They were warships that were the first to be plated with metal armor • They were all steam- propelled • The sides were usually slanted to protect the canons and crew • Some had sharp and strong bows to ram into other ships to sink them • Others were very flat at the top and only a few feet out of the water with a large turret on the deck

  3. Who used them • They were first made in France during the 1850’s while they were in the Crimean war • They weren’t actually used in combat until the Civil War- the Monitor and the Virginia (Merrimack) battle in Hampton Roads, Virginia in 1862, first real fight battle between iron clads • Most of the Union war ships at this time though were still wooden and a single ironclad could take on a fleet of wooden warships, so the confederates would leave an iron ship at the harbor of an important port to defend it

  4. impact • Obviously there was a huge conflict between the north and south that caused them to use these ships in the rivers and also on the outer ports • These ships have had a huge impact on today, these were the building blocks to today’s massive battle ships • It also impacted the fighting style of the navies around the world
