  2. Haikus • A form of Japanese poetry • Combines form, content, and language • Poets write about everyday things – including nature, feelings, or experiences

  3. Haikus • Three short lines – paints a mental image • 1st line - 5 syllables • 2nd line – 7 syllables • 3rd line – 5 syllables

  7. Limericks • The name comes from the Irish town of Limerick. • Are traced back to fourteenth century English history as part of nursery rhymes • Often not seen as a “cultivated poem” • Humorous and sometimes “dirty”!

  8. Limericks • Only five lines • Lines 1,2 and 5 rhyme and have 7 to 10 syllables • Lines 3 and 4 rhyme and have 5 to 7 syllables

  11. “Found” Poetry • Uses prose to construct “original” poems • Identifies words, phrases, and other details that are particularly moving or beautiful • Try to set a certain “mood” for the piece

  12. “Found” Poetry Directions • Carefully re-read your independent novel • Look for 50-100 words – make sure you note the page number • Create a poem that is at least 15 lines long • It must have a title other than “Found Poem”
