3. Home • Welcome to the PARTS OF SPEECH PowerPoint. • This PowerPoint will go through each of the parts of speech, giving definitions and examples. • There will be a short assessment at the end!

5. Noun • A noun is a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. • Examples: • Person: girl • Place: school • Thing: dog • Idea: joy • The dog is chewing the bone. • The woman is shopping at the store. • The kangaroo jumped high. • Nouns can be concrete or abstract.

6. Concrete Noun • is a word used to describe tangible objects such as: a person, place, thing, object, or substance. • is a word that can be perceived through the five physical senses of: hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting and touching. • Examples: • Moose can be found in Canada. • You should read this book.

7. Abstract Noun • is a word used to describe intangible concepts such as: states, events, concepts, feelings, qualities, etc., that have no physical existence. • is a word that cannot be perceived through the five physical senses of: hearing, seeing, smelling, tasting and touching. • Examples: • The boy has a great imagination. • Happiness is different for everyone. • She has a lot of pride.

8. Verb • A verb is a word that shows action or state of being. The action may be physical or mental. • Examples: • The cat jumped on the chair. • The little girl was crying. • The monkey ate the banana. • There are many types of verbs. Two types are action verbs and helping verbs. State of being: am are was Action: run think dream

9. Adjective • An adjective is a word that describes a noun or a pronoun. Adjectives tell how many, what kind, or which one. • Examples: • happy • strong • more • five • this • green • The brown dog was wagging his tail. • The ten chickens were eating. • The happy girl was smiling.

10. Adverb • An adverb is a word that describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb. • Examples: • How: perfectly • When: yesterday • Where: here • To what extent: completely

11. Pronoun • A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun. • Examples: • I > me • us > they • we > he • most > that • them > who • There are subject pronouns and object pronouns.

12. Subject Pronoun •  A pronoun that takes the place of one or more nouns in the subject of a sentence. • Examples: • I • you • he • she • it • we • you • they

13. Object Pronoun • A pronoun that follows an action verb or a preposition. • Examples: • me • you • him • her • it • us • you • them

14. Interjection • An interjection is a word that expresses emotion or strong feeling. • Examples: • Uh-oh! >Ow! • Whew! > Oh no! • Wow! > Yuck! • Hey! > Yeah! “Hurray! Awesome! Bravo!” shouted the delighted fans.

15. Conjunction • A conjunction is a word that joins words or groups of words. • Examples: • and > so • but > while • for > or • neither > yet • either > because

16. Preposition • A preposition relates a noun or pronoun to another word in the sentence. • Examples: • about • during • across • from • beside • in • over • with • The coach looked across the field and smiled at the players.

17. Assessment • Directions: On a separate sheet of paper, write your name and the date at the top. Number your paper from 1-16. • Section I: Identify the nouns and pronouns in the following sentences. • 1. The girl rode her bike. • 2. The stream ran through the woods. • 3. The orange salamander was in the creek. • 4. She loves ice cream! • Section II: Identify the verbs in the following sentences. State whether they are action or helping. • 5. The park is peaceful. • 6. The fish swam quickly. • 7. Nathan opened the jar of pickles. • 8. An ant walks on six legs.

18. Assessment • Section III: Identify the adjectives in the following sentences. • 9. The red apple was delicious. • 10. The tiny caterpillar inched across the green lawn. • 11. The flower smelled pretty. • 12. The turquoise water was warm and relaxing. • Section IV: Identify the adverbs in the following sentences. • 13. She always writers her name on her paper. • 14.
