Parts of Speech • Apart of speechis the role that a word (or sometimes a phrase) plays in a sentence • There are 8 parts of speech • The first three we will learn are nouns, verbs, and adjectives • A noun is a person, place, thing, or idea • Example: teacher, school, book, language
Parts of Speech • Anadjective describes a noun • Examples: pretty, blue, yellow, small • Averb shows action or a state of being • Examples: see, run, swim, think, angry
