  16. Lee planned to attack the North. He wanted to bring the destruction of the war to the North and to show Britain that the South could win.

  17. September 17, 1862: Battle of Antietam • McClellan’s Union army met Lee’s Confederate forces near Sharspburg, Maryland.

  18. 24,000 killed and wounded; the bloodiest day in American history.

  19. Emancipation Proclamation • Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. It declared that all slaves in states “still in rebellion” would be free as of January 1, 1863.

  20. The Proclamation gave the Union a new cause to fight for – to free the slaves. It also convinced Britain to stay out of the war.
