Intro to war • The country of Vietnam was originally a colony of the French, but after WW2 the country tried to gain independence. • Split along the 17th parallel with the Geneva treaty of 1954 • Tensions between North and south.
In comes JFK AND beginning LBJ • JFK has to deal with communism around the world. • Aid the south and Diem against communism. • Diem regime ousted by S.V military • Kennedy wants to pull out troops • LBJ we will continue our support to Vietnam
Domino theory • If one nation falls to communism so will the rest • The key to the entirety of south East Asia is Vietnam, if it falls so will all of the others. • Same thing in the Middle east and the rest of the world
It begins, the gulf of Tonkin • the resolution, undeclared war on the north • Blank check • Gulf of Tonkin incident. Cause of the war.
The war • Guns and butter. • The soldiers differ from those of previous wars • The deaths begin to pile up and the enemy is hard to kill • Operation Rolling Thunder.
Domestic is turning on Lbj • Anti war starts up but is far from peaceful. On both sides of the debate • Cronkite goes to Vietnam • First televised war. • Atrocities committed by both sides. My Lai massacre and the Hanoi Hilton
TeT& lbj’s decision not to run • Tet offensive, the final nail in LBJ’s coffin • LBJ faces opposition within his own party • LBJ announces that he will not run for or accept nomination for president.
