  2. Why did the South secede? • Fear that federal government was controlled by North and would eventually destroy Southern way of life and the slave labor system it depended on.

  3. Why did the Union fight? • To preserve the Union (the United States).

  4. Ft. Sumter • Where: Charleston, SC • When: Apr. 12-14, 1861 • What happened/why important: Confederates fire on Ft. Sumter until Union troops there surrender; starts the Civil War.

  5. Union Strategy: Anaconda Plan • 1. Blockade Southern ports. • 2. Gain control of Mississippi and split South in two. • 3. Capture Confederate capital at Richmond Virginia.

  6. Confederate Strategy: Attrition • Mostly defensive; wear them out. • Go on offensive when opportunity arises.
