This unit introduces students to various aspects of poetry, including analyzing poems, understanding literary devices, and writing their own poems. It also explores famous poems by Edgar Allan Poe and other poets.

  2. Let’s get started! 1. “Know the Lingo” - Complete this worksheet. - Who knows all of them by heart? 2. “Mother to Son” - Read the poem. - Answer the questions. - Complete the option: 10 lines minimum

  4. Flashcards • You will need to know EVERY word from “Know the Lingo.” • You will be making flashcards. • These are due by FRIDAY for a grade! • You can make the flashcards on note cards or Quizlet, but I must see them in your hand on Friday.

  7. Poetry in Songs • Compare and Contrast a SONG to a POEM. • First, we’ll listen to “A Red, Red Rose.” • Then, we’ll listen to “Stereo Hearts.” • Be ready to analyze these two pieces for poetry elements, figurative language and meaning.

  8. Rhyme Scheme What is Rhyme Scheme?A regular pattern of rhyming words in a poem How do I find it? • Circle/Highlight end words in lines of the poem. • Designate “a” as the first sound. • Continue with each letter of the alphabet as your reacha new sound. 4. Continue with the WHOLE POEM!

The Haunted Palace • Turn to the poem in your packet titled, “The Haunted Palace.” • Highlight the vocabulary provided to you on the back page. • In a different color, highlightdetails that describe the castle/palace. • Then, draw the castle as precisely as you can while we listen to a reading.

  18. Time to Write! • Option #1: create a raven-style poem on your own topic. Use the one assigned to you for the sonnet, switch topics with someone, or come up with your own. • Option #2: mimic the style of “The Raven” and create at least 2 stanzas that could seamlessly fit into Poe’s original poem. • BOTH OPTIONS must follow the syllables & rhyme scheme format!

  19. Acrostic Poem • Read the paragraph titled, “Going Vertical-The Acrostic Poem.” • Highlight the main points. • Be ready to share! • What is a Basic vs. Advanced Acrostic Poem?

  20. Advanced Acrostic Poem • Read the 3 examples. • What do you notice about these? • Label their Rhyme Schemes. • Be ready to share!

  21. Your Turn! • Find the box to the bottom right titled, “ASSIGNMENT.” • Read these directions for how you will create your own Advanced Acrostic Poem. • Choose a topic/phrase/name with AT LEAST 14 LETTERS. • Turn this in TYPED by Friday-4/7/17. • If you cannot type it, write it NICELY on printer paper.

  22. Poem Sampling • Let’s check out some poems that our Junior Great Book has to offer!  • “Harlem” (Page 191) • “[n]” (Page 193) What is the tone & theme of each?

  23. Poem Analysis Time • First, we’ll listen to the poem. • The poem, “Snake,” is on Page 198. • Next, we’ll complete a Poetry Analysis Sheet: you will discuss theme, tone, poetic devices, rhyme scheme, summary, and your own perspective.

  24. Poetry Review • Take out your flashcards. • We will look at a poem and find each poetic device in the writing.(We will do this 2x!) • IF they are non-existent, make a LIST somewhere on the page of the poem.
