  1. Spying on the World: An Introduction to Social Studies

Introduction • Our curriculum aims to teach cultural and geographical understanding of countries around the world • Chosen because social studies underemphasized in Hartford schools • Students work in groups as spies to discover the location of criminals • Students will come out with a better understanding of place in world

  3. Context • 6th Grade Classroom • Diverse school such as HMMS • Social Studies/Geography • 5 x 90 minute classes

  4. Learning Objectives • Students will develop and employ fundamental research and spatial geography skills by pinpointing their elected country on a map and identifying and interpreting pertinent facts, statistics and information. • Students will examine the necessary components for effectively communicating researched information by organizing and preparing a poster presentation that conveys the integral facts and elements of their “country investigations.” • Students will formulate substantiated opinions on a current event regarding their country by evaluating, appraising and arguing each other’s beliefs and points of view on the matter, while supporting their own claims. A successful completion of this objective will entail the strong development and/or re-evaluation of each student’s initial opinion. • Students will demonstrate their thorough comprehension of the material regarding their country by solidifying their classmates understanding of each presentation utilizing cooperative learning techniques. • Students will enhance study skills as they prepare for the final assessment during which they recognize and recall facts as well as defend their opinion regarding the current event.

Day 3: Spy Convention • Debate news articles within group • Objective 3, argue opinion of current event • Groups will present posters • Using linguistic and interpersonal intelligence • Students fill out fact sheets • Listen to presentation and fill out sheet provided by teacher to use later for studying for final assessment • Two questions that they have to answer from presentation

  8. Day 5: Final Evaluation • Students will complete final assessment • Questions designed to test understanding about countries • Final question will be short answer form with students writing paragraph stating opinion on respective news articles. • An episode of Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego is shown • Teacher starts grading final assessment • Teacher will lead an oral evaluation of unit
